Ephesus: One-week seminar journey 07.-16. May, 2021
The Eternal Ephesus
Seminar journey
07.-16. May, 2021
with the healer and mystic Paul Skorpen of Theosis
Ephesus warmly welcomes us to her distant shores. This ancient city lies in the heart of Asian Minor and has been a spiritual home for many civilizations and religions throughout the millenniums.
At one point it was booming metropolis of ca. 250,000 people, the birthplace of Artemis and later the primary seat of Christianity. Ephesus has played a central role in the unfoldment of modern history and the material, moral and spiritual development of the West and our self.
The beloved John guided the Mother Maria and Maria Magdalena to sanctuary here after the crucifixion.
St. Paul came here and was shunned and nearly killed.
What Ephesus harbors is a richly layered and palpable expressions of the Divine feminine in harmony with the Divine masculine.
- The primordial earth Mother was worshipped in the hillsides around Ancient Ephesus.
- The Hellenic Greeks would come, around 1000BC, and transform this energy into the Goddess Artemis, daughter of Zeus and Leto. Her massive temple, the ruins of which are near Ephesus, is one of the 7 wonders of the world.
- The Romans came and re-named Artemis ‘Diana’. The Goddess energy is at home in Ephesus in eternity.
Over this week we will visit the home of Mother Maria nestled in the Ephesus hillsides (discovered after the German nun Anne Catherine Emmerich beheld in an inspired vison 200 years ago).
In Ephesus we will visit the expansive Old City:
including the great theatre,
the Roman Library of Celsus,
the various temples (including one for Isis!) and monuments,
and the infamous Church of Mary.
In modern day Selcuk we will visit:
the location of the Artemis Temple,
the massive Basilica of St John,
the Isa Bey Mosque
and the wonderful Museum (where we will encounter lovely statues of the Goddess Artemis).
We will also visit the Cave of the Seven Sleepers (which features a grave for Mary Magdalen).
Around Ephesus are an abundance of sacred towns and temples which we will visit:
Magnesia: The ancient site of Magnesia on the Meander, located 19 km of Ephesus and 24 km of Miletus, lies on a major road which cuts through the archaeological site. It is one of the relatively unknown archaeological sites of the Aegean Region of Turkey. Magnesia was a city of Artemis Leucophryene and her temple there rivaled that of Ephesus. A huge stadium and modest theatre have recently been freed of landslides and are well worth a visit.
Miletus: Located at the mouth of the Meander River, Miletus was one of the largest cities in Anatolia with a population of up to 150,000. Highly prosperous, it was the home of the 6 BC philosophers Anaximander, Anaximenes and Thales, the town planner Hippodamus and architect of Hagia Sophia, Isidorus. Having a prominent position, Miletus became the most important port in this area and it was the most active member of the twelve cities of the Ionian Confederation.
Didyma: Home of the elegant and awe-inspiring Apollo Temple. The word Didyma means “twins” and it was associated by some as being the meeting place of Zeus and Leto to have their twins Apollo and Artemis. Didyma’s Apollo Temple was famed as a prophecy center, second only to Delphi. It was not a city but a sanctuary linked to Miletus by Milesians with a 19 km sacred road.
Priene: The enchanting Priene was once a coastal town, built overlooking the Mediterranean on steep slopes and terraces. Today, after several centuries of changes in the landscape, it is an inland site. Priene was a cosmopolitan city: featuring a synagogue and an Egyptian temple. The temple dedicated to the earth Goddess Demeter radiates a fertile serenity. A dominating temple for the Goddess Athena is not to be missed.
Sardis: The powerful and peaceful Temple of Artemis of Sardis is appropriately set in a fertile valley, as if she arose from the earth. To truly understand Artemis, and the love her people had for the Goddess, a visit to Sardis is most helpful. Originally built in 300 BC by the ancient Greeks, the temple was renovated by the Romans in the 2nd century AD. It is the fourth largest Ionic temple in the world.
The recent excavations of Sardis (the adjacent old city) unearthed the most impressive ancient synagogue yet discovered outside Palestine. The discovery of the Sardis synagogue was highly significant, as it reversed previous assumptions about Judaism in the later Roman empire.
We will enjoy a contemplative week as we explore — through meditations, talks, hands on treatments, and excursions — the extraordinary and powerful home of our rich spiritual heritage.
And we will leave with a better understanding of the need for radical healing and renewal of our presence culture and our personal belief systems.
For those at home on the Island of Patmos you will find Ephesus to be her full complement.
If Patmos is the spirit, then Ephesus and her surroundings is the soul. They are inseparable.
